In the context of the programme,
the Onassis Affiliated Public Benefit Foundation
(U.S.A.) incorporates a series of classes, seminars
or lectures on matters of general Greek interest
into existing Greek Studies programmes at universities
in the U.S.A., Canada, and Central and South America.
The Foundation invites and sponsors prominent visiting
professors from Greece, as well as the U.S.A. and
Europe who, with the backing and full cooperation
of the Chair and following an agreement with the
university, conduct seminars and lectures. Additionally,
the Foundation supplies the relevant department
of the cooperating university with books and textbooks
that have been recommended by the visiting professor
as being useful for the lectures. This is done
before the visiting professor arrives so that those
attending the lectures have the opportunity to
study them. At the end of the programme, the books
are donated to the university’s library. On average,
each lecture is attended by 80 people, while seminars
are attended by an average of 15 people.
Each visiting
professor visits an average of four universities,
conducting at least one lecture and two or three
seminars at each one. Seventy-three professors
and specialists, up to and including the spring
of 2006, have conducted lectures and taught at
one hundred and ninety-four university faculties,
five large museums and thirteen research centres.
The programme has been implemented in thirty-two
American states. Apart from Washington, New York,
Massachusetts and California are the most frequently
visited. In Canada, the programme has been implemented
in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Manitoba. In
the fall of 2003, the programme was extended to
universities in South America, beginning with Argentina
and Chile. Since the summer of 2004, the programme
has included universities in Colombia and Peru
and, since the fall of 2005, universities in Mexico.
The areas of expertise of the professors that
have participated in the programme so far are Archaeology
(Classical, Cycladic, Cypriot), Classical Art,
Byzantine Art and Architecture, Art History, Byzantine
History, the History of Neo-Hellenic Enlightenment,
Modern Greek History, History of the Balkans, Classical
and Neo-Hellenic Literature, Philosophy and Comparative
Philosophy, Theatrical and Cinematic Studies, Political
Science, International Relations, European Studies,
International Law, Economic Sciences, Sociology,
Environmental Preservation, the History of Medicine,
Medical Ethics, Architecture, Monument Preservation,
as well as the study of the large structural projects
in Ancient Greece (from the perspective of civil
engineers).
Since 2000, the Foundation has made more than
2.5 million US dollars available to the specific
programme.
During 2005, twenty visiting professors participated
in the programme and visited thirty-six university
faculties, twenty-six of which were participating
for the first time in the programme. In the spring
of 2006, eight visiting professors visited thirty-seven
university faculties, twenty-one of which were
participating for the first time. Given its large
success, the programme will be extended to other
universities with new countries in Latin America
being added each year.
