The Board of Directors of
the Onassis Foundation has decided on the cancellation
of the event as an act of respect toward all those
contributing to fire-fighting efforts, and in memory
of those who so tragically lost their lives.
In the relevant announcement issued August 25th
the Foundation stated that “the loss of human life,
the destruction of our natural environment and
of property, as well as the threat to our country's
History, can only result in feelings of deep sorrow
and anger. There is one thing, however, that we
cannot do: We cannot give in, we cannot resign
ourselves to the tragic series of events. Our reaction
must be the immediate mobilization of the entire
country. Beyond our feelings of anger and deep
sorrow, priority should be given to our actions.
Both the government and the citizens of Greece
have a responsibility to support, in all ways possible,
the efforts aiming at reconstruction and prevention
of further destruction”.
In addition, the Foundation has announced a financial
contribution of € 5,000,000 toward the purchasing
of equipment.
The revenues from the Delios Apollon event scheduled
to take place at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus will
benefit the Hellenic Society of Disabled Children
(ELEPAP).
Delios Apollon was planned to feature the Filarmonica
della Scala and soloists of the Teatro alla Scala
Ballet. The first part of the event would open
with Igor Stravinsky's "Apollo Musagète",
choreographed by George Balanchine, with Roberto
Bolle in the leading role, while the second
half would feature Gustav Mahler's Sinfonia n.
1. The Filarmonica
della Scala would have been directed by Daniele
Gatti.
