Awarding scholarships to Greek scientists since 1978, the Onassis Foundation has established a tradition in which it continues to invest.

The scholars are selected on the basis of the Foundation's meritocratic criteria through a process of evaluation carried out by special committees of academic advisers and their final selection is validated by the Board of Directors of the Foundation.

University Professors, Academicians and specialized Scientists, as well as former scholars who now hold important positions in academic institutions in Greece and abroad, provide their advisory services on a voluntary basis.

Through the 40 years of its existence, the Scholarship Program is in a constant re-design, following the needs of each era. Since 1978, the Foundation has awarded more than 7,000 scholarships of which 6,239 are scholarships to Greeks, to fund studies in 37 countries at a total cost of approximately 97 million USD.

Today, the Onassis Foundation scholars are excelling in academia, science and the arts, entrepreneurship and sports.
