The project for the renovation and equipment of the National Archaeological Museum Library was completed in 2008; it was supervised by the Architect Konstantinos Staikos and fully funded by the Onassis Foundation. The library was inaugurated on May 26, 2008.
It is one of the oldest libraries of its kind in Greece. Its formation began in the 19th century, along with the construction of the National Archaeological Museum that opened its doors in 1889. Today, the Library comprises about 20,000 volumes that include rare editions, dating back to even the 17th century, as well as valuable archival material.
Its collection includes books on Archaeology, History, Art, Ancient Religions and Ancient Greek Philosophy, as well as ancient Greek and Latin Literature. The excavation journals are considered invaluable archival material refering to the great excavations of the 19th and early 20th century, kept alongside original sketches of the archaeological finds that were created by artists who later became well known masters in their art.
